Microneedling

Fine sterile needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering the body's natural repair response and stimulating collagen production. Used for acne scarring, texture, open pores and overall skin quality, in a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Who it is for

  • Acne scarring, particularly rolling and boxcar scars
  • Uneven texture
  • Open pores
  • Overall skin quality and firmness
  • Stretch marks and certain body scars

Who it is not for

  • Active acne, active infection or open lesions in the treatment area
  • Keloid-prone skin
  • Anyone on isotretinoin or within six months of stopping
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, bleeding disorders or blood thinners without medical clearance
  • Active eczema, psoriasis or rosacea in the area
  • Pregnancy
  • Anyone who cannot commit to strict sun protection during the protocol

How it works

Controlled micro-injury triggers the wound-healing cascade. New collagen and elastin form as the skin repairs, gradually filling depressed scarring and improving texture and firmness. Because the effect comes from your own collagen production, results appear slowly and continue improving for several months after the final session.

The Aglow method

  • Depth calibrated to pigment risk — excessive depth on higher-melanin skin risks post-inflammatory pigmentation
  • Barrier prepared beforehand — we do not needle compromised skin
  • Sun protection is treated as part of the protocol, not as advice — unprotected sun exposure during a microneedling course is the fastest way to end up with pigmentation where the scarring used to be

What to expect

  • Assessment and photographs for internal record
  • Cleanse and topical numbing, 30 to 40 minutes
  • Microneedling pass, depth adjusted by area
  • Calming and barrier support
  • Strict aftercare instructions in writing

Aftercare

  • Redness like moderate sunburn for 24 to 48 hours — this is expected
  • No makeup for 24 hours
  • No actives, acids or retinol for 7 days
  • SPF 50 daily and reapplied, strictly, for the full protocol
  • No gym, steam, sauna or swimming for 48 hours
  • Do not pick flaking skin
  • Gentle cleanser and moisturiser only for 5 days

Frequently asked

Does microneedling hurt?

Topical numbing is applied for 30 to 40 minutes beforehand. Most people rate the sensation three to four out of ten, describing it as a scratchy vibration. Bonier areas are more sensitive.

Is there downtime?

Yes. Expect redness resembling moderate sunburn for 24 to 48 hours and mild flaking around days three to five.

How soon will I see results?

Skin quality improves within a few weeks, but scar improvement appears from week six to eight and continues building for several months as collagen remodels.

How many sessions will I need?

Six to eight, spaced four weeks apart, is typical for scarring. Fewer for general skin quality.

Can it remove acne scars completely?

It improves their appearance, often substantially, but it does not erase them. Ice pick scars respond less well and may need a different approach.

Are there risks or side effects?

Redness, swelling and flaking are expected. Less commonly, breakouts, prolonged redness or post-inflammatory pigmentation, which is the main risk on higher-melanin skin and the reason depth is calibrated carefully.

What should I avoid before coming in?

Stop retinol and acids for 5 days. No waxing or threading for a week. Avoid sun exposure and arrive without a fresh tan. Tell us about any medication, particularly blood thinners and isotretinoin.

Who will perform my treatment?

Microneedling at Aglow is performed by a named practitioner. You will be told who is treating you before your appointment.

Results vary from person to person. Some concerns need a dermatologist rather than a Wellness treatment we'll say so at consultation.
